Smart Cutout is the cutout panel of the image workbench (?tool=cutout). Clicking “Start cutout” hands the current base image to a background removal model running inside the browser (the @imgly/background-removal engine), which returns a transparent PNG and places it over the original as a fresh “cutout” layer — drag it, scale it or delete it as you wish. Then, under “Background replacement”, choose “Transparent background”, “Solid colour” (with a colour of your own) or “Image background” (upload a picture) to replace the base image. The processing is local to the browser and no image is uploaded; the model files, though, have to be downloaded from the network and cached on first use.

It is more general-purpose than “ID Photo Maker” (any background, any purpose) and adds background swapping plus further editing that the standalone remove.bg tool does not have.

Cut a product out and drop it onto a pure white background.
Pull people out of an indoor shot and place them on a landscape photo.
Cut the subject out, export with transparency, then upload it in the “Sticker” tool.
Cut the subject out, add a solid colour, then crop it round with “Rounded Avatar”.
The model is 40–80MB, so it has to be downloaded on first use; once the download is done the recognition stage shows no progress, so wait for the completion notice. From then on the cache makes it much faster.
The model file download failed. Make sure the network is reachable and try again, or use the “no background change” option in “ID Photo Maker” and only crop.
Try again with a photo where subject and background contrast more strongly, or tidy the edge with a small Erase Brush after exporting.
Images are cut out and re-backed inside your browser and are never uploaded to a server; the AI model files are downloaded from a third-party CDN on first use (about 40–80MB, and those requests contain none of your pictures), after which the browser cache reuses them.
